Recap: Closed-door Roundtable Discussion with the UK Intellectual Property Office

7 Aug 2026

On 21 July 2026, the British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai hosted a closed-door roundtable with Ross McNulty, the newly appointed UK Intellectual Property (IP) Attaché to China, bringing together members for an open discussion on the latest developments in China’s intellectual property landscape.

Ross and his team Max, introduced the work of the UK Intellectual Property Office (UK IPO) in China and explained how the team supports UK businesses through policy engagement, practical guidance and regular dialogue with Chinese authorities. They also shared updates on the team’s ongoing work to help businesses navigate China’s evolving IP environment.

The presentation covered several recent policy developments, including the fifth revision of China’s Trade Mark Law, the draft Copyright Law Implementation Regulation, the new Drug Trial Data Protection Implementation Guidance, and recent trends in IP enforcement. Ross and Max highlighted some of the key changes businesses should be aware of and their potential impact across different industries.

Following the presentation, members took part in a lively roundtable discussion, sharing their experiences and raising practical questions about intellectual property protection and enforcement in China. The session provided a valuable opportunity for businesses to exchange views directly with the UK Government and contribute insights that will help inform its future engagement on IP issues.

The Chamber would like to thank Ross McNulty and the UK IPO China team for their valuable insights, as well as all participants for contributing to an engaging and constructive discussion. We look forward to continuing to support members through similar policy-focused events in the future.
