In a collaborative effort between the British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai (BritCham Shanghai), The Department for Business & Trade (DBT) and the China Britain Business Council (CBBC), an exclusive business roundtable was convened on the afternoon of 31 August, in Shanghai.
The event was graced by the esteemed presence of Lord Dominic Johnson of Lainston CBE, Minister of State in the Department for Business and Trade.
Among the attendees of the roundtable session were representatives from BritCham Shanghai and CBBC members – abrdn plc, Aston Martin, BE Education, Deloitte, Haleon, InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), KPMG, Nord Anglia, Smiths Group, and Virgin Atlantic Airways, WBA and WPP.
The gathering commenced with welcome speeches delivered by Tom Simpson, China Chief Representative of CBBC, and Stuart Dunn, Executive Director of BritCham Shanghai.
The objective of the roundtable was twofold: to stay updated on the latest updates and trends while exploring avenues to enhance collaboration. In his speech, Lord Johnson underscored key aspects of UK-China trade and investment relations. He also emphasised the significance of continued engagement and maintaining robust economic ties between the UK and China, highlighting various strategic cooperations in the area of IP, standards and green finance.
During the discussions, representatives from diverse industries shared the challenges their companies face, highlighted the potential for mutual benefits, and expressed their desire for government support in seizing opportunities within China’s dynamic market.
This roundtable session served as an exceptional platform for British businesses in China to engage with senior government leadership, stay informed about the latest developments, and further nurture bonds while enhancing mutual collaboration.
Echoing Lord Johnson’s sentiments, Stuart emphasised the pivotal role of the Chamber in promoting regular interactions among companies and individuals. This ensures better understanding, facilitates discussions on differing opinions, and leverages shared efforts. Stuart also highlighted the collective efforts in addressing global issues such as ESG, where the Chamber supports and promotes the UK as a global leader through impactful initiatives, advanced technologies, projects, and skilled professionals that drive change in China.
Subsequent to the roundtable, a business reception among key stakeholders and member companies of both BritCham Shanghai and CBBC provided an opportunity to exchange insights on trade and investment. Attendees also had the opportunity to engage with Lord Johnson’s delegation, strengthening the trade and investment relationship between the UK and China.
