Event Details

BritCham Shanghai is delighted to partner with the Royal Asiatic Society, China in Shanghai (RAS) for a relaxed social mixer bringing together members and friends from both communities.

At the heart of the evening is a simple idea: to meet people beyond our usual circles, learn more about one another, and discover the interests and experiences that connect us.

While BritCham Shanghai brings together a diverse community from across business and professional life, RAS Shanghai has long provided a home for people with a shared curiosity about the cultures, histories and ideas that shape Asia. Bringing these two communities together creates an opportunity for conversations that go beyond industries and job titles, connecting people through business, culture, personal interests and their experiences of living and working in Shanghai.

Admission includes an open bar and light refreshments.

About the Royal Asiatic Society

The Royal Asiatic Society, China in Shanghai is a community organisation dedicated to fostering knowledge about Asian cultures and history especially among the English-speaking communities of the Shanghai area. Its honorary president is the British Consul General, Matt Burney, and its chairman is James Miller, Professor of Humanities at Duke Kunshan University.

Through our diverse lecture series, focus groups, library and publications, RAS Shanghai provides a forum for the development and expression of interests and expertise from within the local community, and from around the globe, to inspire and to enrich cultural life in Shanghai (and beyond).

The Royal Asiatic Society was founded in 1823, when it received a Royal Charter from King George IV “for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia.” A North China Branch was founded in Shanghai in 1857 and operated until 1952 in what is now the Rockbund Art Museum. The contemporary RAS China formally reconvened the activities of the original North China Branch in Shanghai in 2007.

Today the RAS organizes about fifty events per year, organized into focus groups on art, philosophy, history, film, literature, urban studies, food, etc. It runs an online summer school, and publishes an annual journal under the editorship of Melinda Liu, Beijing Bureau Chief of Newsweek. It has a library of approximately 4,000 items including some rare and historic materials relating to the history of Shanghai.

Membership is open to all and provides access to lectures, films, dinners, and other social events throughout the year.
