Event Details

Join us for an evening discussing cross cultural living and literary imagination with Adam Williams, a compelling British historical novelist. Williams’ decades of experience in international trade and diplomacy give him an astute understanding of what forces may pull apart the mechanical realities of power, religious tension, and political ambition. The primary hook of the two books discussed, the Nile river “turning to blood” and killing wildlife, is brilliantly treated as a scientific mystery colliding with theology and court intrigue.

A Jewish professor, discovers a mutilated body on the bank of the River Nile and decides to play detective — little knowing that the secret he has stumbled upon could shake the empire. Assassins are on the prowl, a mother and child are being hunted, yet the authorities block Samuel’s efforts to find the truth at every step. Meanwhile the general political calm of the kingdom is being torn apart by rumors of a huge foreign army of crusaders about to descend on Jerusalem. The peace of the kingdom is about to erupt into war. Can Samuel find the mother and child in time?

Admission includes light food and drinks.

About the Royal Asiatic Society

The Royal Asiatic Society, China in Shanghai is a community organisation dedicated to fostering knowledge about Asian cultures and history, especially among the English-speaking communities of the Shanghai area. Its honorary president is the British Consul General, Matt Burney, and its chairman is James Miller, Professor of Humanities at Duke Kunshan University.

Through our diverse lecture series, focus groups, library and publications, RAS Shanghai provides a forum for the development and expression of interests and expertise from within the local community, and from around the globe, to inspire and to enrich cultural life in Shanghai (and beyond).

The Royal Asiatic Society was founded in 1823, when it received a Royal Charter from King George IV “for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia”. A North China Branch was founded in Shanghai in 1857 and operated until 1952 in what is now the Rockbund Art Museum. The contemporary RAS China formally reconvened the activities of the original North China Branch in Shanghai in 2007.

Today the RAS organises about fifty events per year, organised into focus groups on art, philosophy, history, film, literature, urban studies, food, etc. It runs an online summer school, and publishes an annual journal under the editorship of Melinda Liu, Beijing Bureau Chief of Newsweek. It has a library of approximately 4,000 items, including some rare and historic materials relating to the history of Shanghai.

Membership is open to all and provides access to lectures, films, dinners, and other social events throughout the year.
