On the evening of St. Andrew’s Day, 30 November 2024, BritCham Shanghai proudly hosted its annual St. Andrew’s Ball at Pudong Shangri-La, Shanghai.
We extend our deepest gratitude to our Gold Sponsor, BE Education, whose generous support made this event possible. Special thanks also go to our Wine Sponsor, Ray Fine Wines, Spirit Sponsor, Diageo, Entertainment Sponsor, Upskill, Beer Sponsor, Guinness, and our many prize sponsors and partners. Their contributions ensured a memorable evening, filled with lively celebrations and a dance floor that stayed vibrant throughout the night.
Honouring the rich traditions of Scotland, the evening featured a stellar performance by Whisky Kiss, whose electrifying live music and dynamic Ceilidh dances captivated the audience. Complementing the authentic Scottish experience—with bagpipes, traditional Scottish cuisine, and the ‘Address to the Haggis’—were enchanting Chinese cultural performances that highlighted the enduring ties between Scotland and China.
Matt Burney, CMG, British Consul-General, Shanghai, highlighted the thriving partnership between Scotland and China: “China is a key overseas market for Scotland and its sixth-largest export market. In 2023, China was the 5th largest market globally for Scotch whisky (£235m) and the 3rd largest market for Scottish salmon (£47m). The economic ties are underpinned by a genuine cultural connection — a shared appreciation for quality, heritage, and innovation.”
The evening also had a charitable focus, with all proceeds benefiting Renewal.
Renewal offers homeless people a range of services on the road to a better life. Starting with urgent help and frontline support for men and women living on the streets, Renewal also offers longer-term development to help people build relationships, find satisfying work and move into a permanent home. Since 2008, their base in central Shanghai has been successfully training people for work in busy urban careers. Then, in 2023 Renewal’s rural career hub opened in Yunnan province where your gifts are training people in agricultural careers – especially the cultivation, processing, packaging and sales of their own tea.
Thanks to the generosity of guests and sponsors, the evening raised RMB 73,298 through silent and live auctions, with the latter led by Shaw Chung of Sotheby’s.
The festivities extended beyond Shanghai; on the eve of the St. Andrew’s Day, BritCham Shanghai also hosted a themed dance event in Ningbo, supported by the University of Nottingham Ningbo, China. This prelude set the stage for a weekend of cross-cultural celebration and strengthened ties within the community.
