On the evening of 21 January, BritCham Shanghai cordially welcomed a full house of members and friends at Morton’s The Steakhouse Shanghai, for its annual featured Scottish Connecter event, commemorating the birthday of the Scottish poet Robert Burns and celebrating his spirit.
Stuart Dunn, Executive Director of BritCham Shanghai, commenced the activity by extending gratitude to the sponsors and guests and acknowledging the enduring bonds of our community.
Richard Baker, Head of China, APAC Lead for Energy Transition, Scottish Development International, emphasised the importance of fostering trade between Scotland and China, as well as attracting high-quality investment into Scotland. Expressed gratitude to the BritCham Shanghai for organising events that showcase Scotland’s hospitality to Chinese partners. Mr. Baker noted the growing interest from Chinese companies in establishing operations in Scotland, including offshore wind and pharmaceuticals. The evening is framed as a celebration of Scotland, Robert Burns, and the whisky that connects them.
As networking went on, we gladly invited Alan Bryson, Vice Consul at the British Consulate General in Shanghai, to present Address to a Haggis, a poem written by Robert Burns and introduce the Scottish dish, Haggis.
We appreciate our guests who participated in the poetry reading session and contributed to making it a wonderful experience.
Katie, who read Scottish poet Robert Burns‘s Ae Fond Kiss.
Chris, who read Scottish poet Robert Burns‘s The Cotter’s Saturday Night.
Curt, an old friend of Burns Night event, joining us for his third consecutive year, read Scottish poet Robert Burns‘s To a Mouse.
Special thanks to our Event Sponsor, Scottish Development International, Whisky Sponsor, Douglas Laing & Co, Whisky Tasting Session Partner The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, Venue Partner, Morton’s The Steakhouse Shanghai, as well as our lucky draw prize sponsors.
