On 20 March, BritCham Shanghai, in partnership with the British Council and the UK Department for Business and Trade (DBT), hosted a closed‐door roundtable with Rupert Daniels, Director of Services and Skills at DBT. The roundtable brought together BritCham Shanghai members and UK businesses in the creative sector to explore opportunities for inward investment, growth, and closer collaboration.
Rupert Daniels, who leads DBT’s work across creative industries, consumer goods, sports, and education, returned to China for his second visit in his current role. This visit was a testament to his commitment to the UK’s creative prowess. In his address, Rupert emphasised the importance of supportive policy frameworks and forward‐thinking initiatives to bolster the creative sector, especially in an era when UK–China dialogues are set to resume in 2025. At the meeting, attendees shared views on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, discussing ways in which both the UK government and industry could collaborate to ensure the creative sector remains a vibrant contributor to bilateral growth.
This roundtable is the second in our Creative Industries series. The inaugural session, held on 12 January and graced by Baroness Shriti Vadera, set a high standard with its in‐depth exploration of talent mobility, strategic collaborations, and narrative building in the creative domain. Her session provided valuable insights into how the UK’s creative industries might further elevate their presence on the international stage.
Looking Ahead
Rupert Daniels’ recent visit and the insightful dialogue at this roundtable underscore our commitment as a membership organisation to facilitating constructive interactions with key stakeholders in both the public and private sectors. As we approach a new chapter in the UK–China relations, with renewed ministerial dialogues and strategic visits on the horizon, BritCham Shanghai will continue to support discussions that encourage collaboration and the exchange of ideas across various business sectors. We remain dedicated to providing a platform where our members can engage with industry leaders and policy stakeholders, ultimately contributing to a dynamic and resilient business community.
