Two-day Course | Leadership for Directors

Strong leadership is increasingly fundamental to the successful realisation of an organisation’s vision and purpose. This intensive course provides a valuable opportunity for directors to explore strategic leadership issues both within and beyond their organisation. This module introduces a more personalised approach to leadership and delegates will be encouraged to understand and develop their own self-awareness and emotional intelligence.

British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai cordially invited you to attend the two-day ‘Leadership for Directors’ course, delivered by the Institute of Directors (IoD) on 7-8 April, each day from 9 am to 5 pm, in the office of BritCham China in Beijing.

The Institute of Directors (IoD) was founded in 1903 in London and within three years we were awarded a Royal Charter to support, represent, and set standards for business leaders nationwide. We are the oldest business membership organisation in the world, and we have about 20,000 members, including over 3,000 international members. We are also the only organisation that awards ‘Chartered Directors’ across the world.

Gain an understanding of the key competencies required to be an effective leader at the board level with the opportunity to practice and develop some of these competencies. During the course, you will assess different leadership and decision-making techniques (including bias), determine how to build, and sustain high-performing and diverse teams, manage conflict, and influence others, and evaluate how these can be applied to your own organisation to contribute to its increased success.

By attending this course, you will gain the knowledge and skills to:

Develop an understanding of how leadership can be defined and understood in relation to the director’s role on the board
Apply techniques for developing a greater awareness of oneself and of the motivations and behaviours of others
Create a culture which constructively engages others in the organisation to achieve the strategic objectives, and to respond effectively to crisis and change
Identify how leaders create influence and impact within and beyond the organisation and assess relevant stakeholder engagement strategies

The IoD Award in Leadership for Directors (LfD), is a module of the Certification in Company Direction Qualification provided by the Institute of Directors.

Murray Eldridge CDir

Business Experience

Murray Eldridge is a Chartered Director and has been a member of the loD for over 15 years. He has 40 years of international experience in shipping, offshore oil and gas, telecoms, water and international consulting.A board level operator for the last 20 years, he has held marketing, sales, strategy and commercial roles as executive director as well as managing director and non-executive roles with companies such as Smit International, British Telecom, Cable & Wireless and Global Crossing .Murray also has extensive experience in setting up and managing international joint ventures and alliances in the UK, China, Japan and Indonesia.

As a consultant has worked with Philips, Coca-Cola, Alcatel, Consolis, independent oil companies, engineering companies, manufacturers, desalination companies and the Royal College of Defence Studies among others. He has also undertaken external board evaluations for FTSE-listed companies under the UK Corporate Governance Code. Murray’s involvement with companies encompasses start-ups through to blue chip, global leaders and he remains a shareholder and advisor to the desalination company he helped found in 2005. His experience includes working through three major crashes in three different industries occasioning major strategic and organisational change programmes.

Professional credentials and training experience

Murray is a Fellow of the Institute of Directors, Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute and holds an MBA. He also received the prestigious Magnolia Award for his work in China – only the second British businessman to receive the award at the time. Murray works with university business schools (Leeds, Salford and the Open University), has been a keynote speaker at conferences and seminars and led webinars on leadership and performance for the Open University Business School.
He is the author of Leading High Performance (Crimson Publishing,2014) and a qualified British Rowing sports coach. In his capacity as loD course leader Murray has worked with organisations that include: Costain, Wessex Water, Alstom, KBR , UKAS, Centrica, ChiefFire Officers Association ,Rural Energy
Agency, among others. His broadand deep involvement in a number of different industries, combined with his current water company activity, ensure he brings interesting and current perspectives to the loD courses he facilitates.
